FAAE President-Elect Bruce Rodgers welcomes you into his "integrated" neighborhood where the Arts, Education, and Commerce live and work in a vibrant, exciting, and mutually supportive society. Arts, Technology, Careers and High School Learning Communities: Working Together for Students

Presenters: Cindy Balistreri and Susan Burke

The session will highlight a recent presentation to Sarasota County district administrators by arts community members regarding the integration of careers in the arts, Career and Tech Ed courses, and arts courses in high school Small Learning Communities. Also presented will be research used to convince the district to work with the local arts community to provide professional development for teachers, and integrated, real-world career experiences for arts students.

Gocio Elementary School Principal, Steve Dragon and music and drama teachers, Mary Jane Brantley and Dawn Burns will share their school's plan for including ALL the arts in the elementary experience. Gocio, a Kennedy Center National School of Distinction in Arts Education is currently the only elementary school in Sarasota offering visual art, music, dance and drama to all 800 students taught by certified arts teachers. Topics addressed during this session will include how it all began, scheduling, collaborative planning, community involvement and resources and the annual culminating activity "A Celebration of the Arts!".

Successful advocacy efforts for arts education depend upon you! You are here because you care and understand the vitally important role arts education plays in a child's education and future. To sustain, enhance, and expand arts education within our schools and communities, you must develop your arts education advocacy muscles. Come workout with us during this session. We'll discuss and share strategies and updates to strengthen our collective advocacy muscles to move arts education forward.

Angela and Katie, along with Galyana, are the first four-year completers in our Musical Theatre program, which was instituted in 2004.

“This Place is Mine” from the musical The Phantom --Performed by Kaitlyn McMonigle

A duet acting scene from The Blueberry Hill Accord by Daryl Watson - Performed by Jennet O’Brien and Stephanie Olney. Jennet and Stephanie are also four year acting students who have graduated and will be attending Savannah College of Art and Design in the fall.

This scene was selected as a Critic’s Choice performance at our District 12 Thespian Festival and went on to receive a “Superior” rating at the Florida State Thespian Festival.

Monologues from Look Homeward, Angel by Ketti Frings and Food Chain by Nicky Silver - Performed by Amanda Amat

“The Impossible Dream” from the musical Man of La Mancha - performed by Derek Galarza Derek is a 2008 graduate who completed four years of acting and three years of musical theatre. He will be attending Carnegie Mellon University in the fall on a full-four year acting scholarship.

MCCA Acting Program Mission Statement

It is the mission of the MCCA Acting program to develop a student’s innate talents. Through exposure to a variety of acting techniques, students will learn character development, movement, voice production, script analysis, improvisation, and pantomime, as well as the practical skills required in theatre, such as resume writing, and the audition process. Acting students are expected to participate in extra-curricular productions as a means of applying the theories and skills taught in class. Students completing the program will be prepared to audition for post-secondary training to further their acting careers, as well as to enjoy theatre as a life-long avocation.

This session will describe two unique partnerships, which is grant program supported by the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network, each school will discuss their mission, goals and achievements, their development efforts working with local artist and their long range goals for the future.

Specific careers are profiled, through written material, podcasts, and video footage, provided by professionals, who are working in those careers. You will have the opportunity to see some careers, in action, and listen to candid interviews. Other career resources are provided to let students know how to prepare for some of the most exciting careers on the planet, in the Arts.
