Heading: It’s in the News: “Senator Kennedy Touts Importance of Accounting for Music Education Class Time”


On November 1, at an event which featured the head of the Walnut Hill School and various other prominent education leaders, Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts spoke at length regarding his future vision for the No Child Left Behind Act, about the importance of education and the arts, and about the value of music education. Most importantly though, Senator Kennedy stated that, "... we will ask States to keep track of how much time students are spending in arts and music, to ensure that all students receive a full and well-rounded education." MENC: The National Association for Music Education has developed a legislative proposal calling for state level report cards designed to increase accountability in school arts programs during the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind. Florida was the first state to adopt the National Standards for Arts Education. Let’s be the first to ensure that our students have time in the school day to achieve those arts standards.
